These are paid temporary positions limited to a maximum of 9 months from the date of hire and applications will be considered as they are received. In addition to a fantastic place to work, CDOT offers all temporary employees paid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 48 hours. The majority of CDOT’s temporary Highway Maintenance Worker positions work 40 hours per week with the opportunity for overtime. Description of Job The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has 2-5 immediate openings for temporary Highway Maintenance Worker positions in our Traffic section located in Aurora. These positions will work outside taking care of the state highway and roadway systems, by operating heavy equipment, performing construction duties, and installing, maintaining, and removing traffic signs, marks, and stripes throughout the larger Metro Denver area. Work assignments are frequently performed under hazardous, high volume traffic situations including bad weather conditions. Night and shift work is required for many highway maintenance positions, including working weekend hours and holidays as needed or required. Highway maintenance workers are required to respond to emergencies 24 hours per day/7 days per week. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: These positions install, maintain and remove pavement markings, stripes, and signs along the State highway and roadway system; Restripe state roads in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices to promote a safer environment for motorists traveling within the larger Metro Denver area; Perform various tasks with minimal supervision and be able to work independently with several pieces of equipment during the process of striping; Capable of lifting loads into a 2 1/2 ton Stake Bed Truck with tools and materials to complete daily projects; Apply various types of paint by machine and hand applicators; apply crosswalks, stop bars, lane control arrows, symbols and legends to the roadway surface; removes undesirable markings with hand operated gas powered grinders; Assist with regular maintenance to avoid equipment and vehicle failures; change engine oil, filters, grease etc.; change grinder blades, oil parts needed for equipment; clean, adjust and make minor repairs on equipment (trucks, grinders, striping machines); Respond to emergencies by following prescribed procedures such as stopping or slowing traffic; Set out signs and cones for "traffic control safe zones" around work areas to divert traffic; Capable of understanding and posting work orders on the computer for traffic operations; Other duties as assigned. Work Environment: Some positions will work Monday through Thursday, while others will work Tuesday - Friday All positions will work from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM on their assigned days Exposure to loud noise Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dust, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products Required to use hand and power tools Some equipment requires the use of respirators Work in close proximity to heavy traffic Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10 – 20’ Required to drive CDOT vehicles May be required to work nights and weekends as part of regular job duties Frequently respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and may work overtime including weekends and holidays Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights This experience must be specifically documented in your application.
