My name is Gabrielle Martin, and I recently graduated from Emerson College with a BA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing. "The Emerson Experience" is a term often overheard on tours, around campus, or in classroom spaces; I believe it refers to the school's commitment to centering students' education in the arts and communication sciences with an emphasis on liberal arts. To me, however, "the Emerson Experience" also extends to encompass the importance of networking, of building strong working relationships and communicating through creative collaborations, of taking an open-minded approach, and of an enthusiastic, eager work ethic. Academics are, of course, part of "the Emerson Experience." Classes at Emerson are rigorous and require a conscientious approach. Through the Writing, Literature, and Publishing program, I cultivated skills such as academic writing, content editing, journalism ethics, fact-checking, interviewing, pitching, profiling, proofreading, review writing, researching, and workshopping. At the credit of various classroom workshops, I have had creative submissions published in Black Swan Magazine, The Tiferet Journal, Gauge Magazine, and YourMag. A portfolio of previous publications can be provided upon request. It was through an assignment for a publishing class that I was gained internship experience; I was interviewing Maria Allen, editor-in-chief at SOUTH SHORE HOME, LIFE, & STYLE (SSHLS), for a personal profile when she offered me an editorial internship at her magazine. Through working with Maria, I gained a better understanding of and insight to magazine management. I was able to utilize the skills I had learned at school, such as interviewing, editing, fact-checking, proofreading, and pitching; I was also able to learn from professionals in the field about advertising, design, marketing, photographer-photoshoot coordination, and social media marketing. I continue to work for SSHL&S, now as a freelance writer; I feel grateful to continue contributing to this publication. Another component of the "Emerson Experience," for me, was attending their European exchange program at their satellite campus in the Netherlands, called Kasteel Well, as a first sophomore semester. The Kasteel curriculum helped me become involved in local Dutch communities: during this time, I volunteered at a care farm and local kindergarten class. I also was able to visit a TBS clinic (a detention under a hospital order, unique to the Netherlands), a Dutch prison, and a refugee camp, as well as the Amsterdam opera, the Red Light District, the Rijksmuseumand, the Anne Frank House, and a number of other enriching excursions that immersed me in the rich culture of the Netherlands, including a course teaching of the Dutch colonial and monarchical histories. As a result of this incredible experience, I prioritized attending another semester overseas, this time as a first semester senior in Athens, Greece. I attended the American College of Greece: Deree, which was half American students who were living abroad, and half Greeks! At Deree, I studied Ancient Greece, focusing on their religions, histories, art, and Classics, in addition to engaging with the Greek perspective of more modern American literature. Interests outside of traveling, adventure, and exploration include literature, history, and environmentalism, as well as art, baking, and activism. I pride myself in being a hard-working, detail-oriented individual who enjoys working with others and brings a fresh perspective to collaborative projects.
