Social Media and Public Relations Director Neha Penmetsa, Sales & Marketing
I am currently a junior attending the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. During my education, I have taken classes in public relations writing and execution. I have learned how to pitch and write press releases. I wrote press releases for real-life clients such as a non-profit, Paige’s Butterfly Run. In a professional environment, my professors also trained me to plan and write media kits for professional organizations such as Gucci and Nike. I learned how to draft and write press releases, social media releases, media pitches, biographies, talking points, and fact sheets. More examples of my public relations writing and media skills can be found in the portfolio section on my portfolio website. This past summer, I worked as a corporate communications intern for Lennox International. I had a unique opportunity to help maintain and convey the Lennox brand’s message throughout all of Lennox International’s internal publics. A big part of my job was to write articles and statements for the company’s internal employee website, The LIINK. I wrote articles about scholarship programs, other internship experiences, and pitched and wrote a statement and article about Juneteenth. In this article, I was able to give recognition to a holiday with roots in the same state the company headquarters resided in and educate the internal publics on its significance for the first time in Lennox history. My time at Lennox International had taught me how to write in a more professional manner as well as write for a global audience. Working remotely, I learned how to utilize new resources such as Office 365 tools in order to mimic face-to-face communications as authentically as possible. Today, I am the social media and public relations director of JERK Magazine. As the social media director, I have learned how to utilize social media as a tool for two-way communication between the organization and its external publics. I have also learned how to research trends and create new content for the social media channel. Over this past summer, I conducted numerous campaigns in order to help our company fulfill its role of social responsibility. We utilized our growing platform to raise nearly $1000 for two different anti-racist organizations. In addition, we also conducted campaigns informing our publics about recent news and ways they can help facilitate change in their home towns. This experience was truly significant because I lead my entire company in creating strategy for a meaningful campaign. I learned about the importance of giving back through the company’s perspective rather than just as an individual.
