Application Deadline: February 28, 2021 Job Description: Birds Canada is seeking a highly motivated and skilled person to coordinate the programs and day to day operation of the Long Point Bird Observatory. This includes the Migration Monitoring Program, Young Ornithologists’ Workshop/Internship, Tree Swallow Project, Breeding Bird Census Project, Latin American Training Program, facilitating and conducting collaborative research projects, and the operation and maintenance of three research stations and associated equipment. The position is well suited for someone who is an excellent birder, bander and naturalist, and loves working outdoors and coordinating and doing fieldwork, enjoys excellent physical health, is very well organized, demonstrates initiative, and has an exceptional work ethic and interpersonal skills. The starting monthly wage will be $3000-3500 CDN (plus health and dental benefits) depending on qualifications and experience. Costs of field food, accommodation, and travel are provided. We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications and skills: Excellent bird identification skills by sight and sound. Knowledge and enjoyment of all other aspects of natural history. Excellent working knowledge of migration for all taxa, specifically landbirds, stopover ecology and conservation, bird monitoring techniques (censusing, counting and estimating, banding), and following standardized field protocols. Previous banding (at least 5000 birds banded of ~100 species) and bander training experience with a strong emphasis on passerines is required. Experience working or volunteering at a migration monitoring station, or similar research/field station. Certification as a Bander or Trainer by the North American Banding Council is highly desirable. Comfortable with public speaking and guiding. A B.Sc. in biology (or exceptional field experience). Strong leadership and mentoring skills needed to oversee a large cadre of volunteers and seasonal field staff and take charge of a major research and monitoring operation. Canoe, motorboat, and 4×4 experience, driver’s license, basic handy-person skills and an excellent working knowledge of windows-based computer programs. Analytic and writing skills are also highly desirable. The SOC is located at 300 Richards Blvd, Sacramento, where the team works alongside sworn officers of the Sacramento Police Department (SPD).SacRT's SOC work environment is very dynamic, providing a variety of tasks throughout the day. The SOC operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and offers a variety of shifts with flexible schedules for full-time and part-time positions. These positions are contract positions and no benefits are provided.Examples of DutiesThe SOC Specialists perform a variety of tasks, including, but are not limited to:Operate 2-way radio to communicate with SacRT staff, law enforcement officers, (SPD) volunteers and other guards.Handle and screen incoming calls from the AlertSacRT mobile reporting app, which includes speaking with potential crime victims, witnesses and other SacRT patrons reporting problems, and coordinate the appropriate response in a timely manner.Provide records, warrants and other related information using local and state law enforcement databases.Use light rail station and train video surveillance equipment to search and identify system related problems, suspicious activity or terrorist threats.Coordinate and manage response efforts for high priority and emergency type of calls for service.Record video from live train footage as requested and maintain accurate documentation of all recorded video.Review video footage from light rail station stations and trains, and buses for issues such as: passenger injuries, unattended items (bicycles, backpacks, carts, etc.), passenger interactions, vehicles blocking the track, and interactions between officers and passengers.Respond to, and process requests for video footage via phone and email, and accurately document all requests.
