Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Office of Communications & Public Affairs (OCPA) Document Translator (Spanish)/Media Interpreter (Spanish) Job Description Monthly Salary: $7,133 Fully Paid Medical/Dental Insurance Contract through October 31, 2021 THIS POSITION WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK ONSITE IN LOS ANGELES, CA The following provides a general description of duties and a more specific description of the Document Translator (Spanish)/Media Interpreter (Spanish) position requirements. Please note that the summary of responsibilities and required abilities identified below is not an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements. The Document Translator (Spanish)/Media Interpreter (Spanish) will provide administrative support to the OCPA with the primary responsibility of the translation of documents that relay information (including press releases, talking points for media interviews and speeches, social media post, etc.) needed to facilitate primarily Spanish/non-English monolingual, or limited English proficiency individuals access to and understanding of information related to COVID- 19. Additionally, the Interpreter and Translator will provide real-time media interpretation for press briefings and in response to media inquiries, as needed. The Document Translator (Spanish)/Media Interpreter (Spanish) directly reports to the Director of Public Affairs for professional oversight and direction. The duties of the Document Translator (Spanish)/Media Interpreter (Spanish) include, but are not limited to: Translate accurate and complete information related to COVID-19; Develop interpreted materials based on Public Health’s style guide or branding standards; Implement Public Health materials that embrace the diversity of Los Angeles; coordinate with the Director of Public Affairs to assure that all translated content is culturally inclusive, sensitive, and responsive; Must quickly be able to translate COVID-19 press releases, talking points for media interviews, and speeches to Spanish; Coordinate with the Director of Communications to translate COVID-19 social media posts, and/or other documents to Spanish; Provide oral interpretation in Spanish during press/media interviews, telebriefings, or meetings when needed. Provide administrative support to the OCPA related to COVID-19 communications; Ensure completeness and submission of training, HR, and other personnel documentation required by DPH; Assess operational and administrative issues and makes recommendations for solutions to maximize efficiencies; Comply with DPH training regarding confidential information related to personal information; and Accept responsibility for other duties, as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Three years of experience in a staff capacity analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of problems of organization, systems and procedures, programs, facility planning, budget, or personnel, one year of which must have been in a responsible staff capacity in the administrative staff organization of a department or a central administrative staff organization; Five years of experience as a translator, preferably in the health sector and fluent in medical terminology; Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of interpretive techniques to multiple audiences; Successful completion of a Healthcare Translation Training Program, which includes a section covering Medical Terminology or Certification from the American Translators Association (ATA) for language(s) certified by ATA; An established proficiency level that is equivalent to the standards set forth by the ATA whose Code of Professional Conduct requires the following components to maintain excellence: Mastery of the Spanish language equivalent to that of an educated native speaker, including regional idioms and colloquialisms; Follow a code of ethics and ethical standards as prescribed by the professional interpreters’ organization; Recognize and address common misunderstandings that may arise due to differing cultural expectation and assumptions; Maintain current knowledge of the subject material and its terminology in both languages; Maintain appropriate professional boundaries avoiding any conflict of interests; Continue efforts to improve, broaden, and deepen skills and knowledge; Render communication accurately and transparently, including brief written translations (i.e., signs, instructions, etc.); and Maintain impartiality when conveying information; Demonstrated experience with translation services displaying non-judgmental, culture-affirming attitudes and provide work professionally and courteously; Provide translation services in a manner without interjecting personal opinions and without personal commentary; and A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Desirable Qualifications: Ability to maintain a professional, positive attitude and work ethic; Proficient in various computer programs, including Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and other specialized programs such as Microsoft Teams; Experience working with community agencies and organizations such as healthcare providers; Excellent customer service, written and oral communication, organization, time management, and prioritization skills; Ability to work well independently and with co-workers; Ability to set and adhere to deadlines; Ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals during a time of crisis and distress; Excellent critical thinking and judgment skills; and Detail-oriented.
